The blades on this 4-Piece Recreational Kayak Paddle 220cm (7'2") BIC are not overly flexy, but neither are they the stiffest we've ever seen. They are asymetric and curved, 7" wide, with a pointy tip at the top outer edge of each blade. These blades are off-white with dark orange trim lines, and the aluminum shaft is black anodized. There is no direct aluminum to aluminum contact at the two blade joints, so you do not have to worry about this portion fusing together if you use them in salt water. However, the center joint is direct metal-to-metal contact, so you do need to take them apart into at least two pieces after ocean use.
The Rec paddle is about 2 pounds, 14 ounces, so not a lightweight but they do have some nice features. They are shock-corded like tent poles to keep all four pieces together, come in a little mesh bag, and the biggest piece is only 25" long. These are fine for touring (oceans, lakes, etc) or calmer rivers, but are not strong or wide enough for any real whitewater. A very reasonably priced "airplane-able" option. The shaft is not covered with anything at the grip areas, so these are cold to the touch on chilly days. Best to use this paddle with gloves if it's cool outside.

The Bravo 4-piece aluminum shaft kayak paddle is 230cm (7'6") long with red blades that can be spotted easily in the river or ocean if you drop it. These blades, and the aluminum shaft, are both fairly strong so this is a good choice for inflatable kayakers who need a back up in whitewater. The longest section is about 30.5", which is bigger than the longest section of the other four-piece kayak paddles we sell. Unless you drive a really short kayak though, it should still stow behind you without too much trouble.
If you use this in salt water, the center joint is direct metal to metal contact, so you should always take at least take this middle joint apart after paddling. If you fail to do so, by the next day the salt residue can corrode the aluminum, and you may have yourself a three piece paddle instead of a 4-piece. The grip areas are ovaled and covered with black shrink tubing, which is nice, and the red blades are asymetric spooned designs. They are not huge blades but the surface area is big enough for most whitewater paddlers, though our main intent for stocking this unit is for it to be a back-up to your main two- or one piece paddle. What's shown in the photo above is actually the two-piece version, though it's exactly the same otherwise.

A great take-apart whitewater paddle at an affordable price!

The Escape touring paddle ($99, shown at two angles) is another American made Cannon product. It's light enough for kids, though it was made for adults. These have black anodized tempered aluminum shafts, and nylon insert ferrules for a super tight, (salt water) corrosion-proof joint, and an asymetric blade design. At 2 lbs, 10 oz, it's light & has super stiff blades.
Because this is a touring paddle, we feel the aluminum is adequate strength-wise while decreasing the cost $30 to $40 from what a glass shaft equivalent would be, but if you pull really hard like we did in Kauai trying to go upstream against the current, it is possible to bend the shafts a bit. One could argue that the CBH paddles we carry are a better value, though the CBH's do not have the warranty that the American made Cannons do. Oval grips for both hands like all Cannons, stocked in 90" and 94" sizes, with other sizes by special order. The blade color is more of a dark yellow now, not the pumpkin color shown.
Note: way back this paddle used to be called the Nokomis, and now Cannon has gone back to that name again; it is the same paddle. The "Serenity" name has also been used for Cannon's narrow tour paddles. Serenity now!
We also stock a four piece fiberglass version of the Serenity/Nokomis, and sometimes we will have four-piece aluminum shaft versions of the Escape, but not every variation of every paddle is listed on our site. You are always welcome to phone us at 925-820-BOAT to see exactly what's in our current inventory.

We now recommend the Cannon Wave 4 piece

$159.00 |
The 4-Piece FGX glass-shaft Wave is identical to it's two-piece brother (which we are currently phasing out in favor of the Cannon Accent Rage), except for the number of pieces it breaks into. The individual sections of this four piece, which is 230 cm when assembled, are about 26.5". This is a superb choice for people doing air travel, especially to salt water destinations. Although we do have aluminum 4-piece paddles, sometimes including an aluminum shaft version of this Wave, every one of those has the potential to corrode itself together virtually overnight - something you do not have to worry about much with fiberglass shafts.
If you purchase this with a kayak you will get $16 off the $159 retail price with your accessory discount, so bear that in mind. A while back we did get a handful of these with ivory colored blades on an occasion when Cannon was out of yellow blades, so if you prefer ivory let us know and we will see if we still have them. Normally, yellow is the default color for us with all Cannon paddles. 230cm is the only size we carry the 4-piece versions in.

New - Adjustable Length Cannon Wave Slider Paddle

$65.00 |
The Cannon Cascade Kid's ($65) two-piece paddle is an American made model with an oval-grip 1-1/8" aluminum shaft. It is extremely light at only 32 oz. The standard version is 86" long with 65 degree left or right offsets (or you can have the blades in-line, which is what most kids prefer), but longer or shorter lengths can also be special ordered for a small upcharge. The blade size on this paddle is quite a bit smaller than other paddles on this page, scaled down so it won't wear out smaller arms. This is not apparent in our photo since there isn't another adult paddle blade in the picture, but the Cascade blade is maybe 70% the surface area of the Cannon Wave's blades.
The standard blade color we carry is dark yellow, not the white shown. The take-apart joint in the black shaft has a fiberglass ferule. This means that if you use it in salt water and forget to take it apart, it won't fuse itself together into a one-piece paddle, like those with straight aluminum-to-aluminum joints tend to. The ferule also provides a firm fit between the two halves, making your Cascade feel like a single piece paddle. This is definitely not a toy or just for kids, but rather, a scaled-down version of the adult Cannon models that the ladies will appreciate too. That said, the Cascade is not a whitewater paddle either; the shaft will bend with the amount of torque needed in rapids, and the blades could break as well under this type of stress. It is intended for touring purposes only. Drip rings come with all Cannon paddles. Children will love it!
Note: another good choice for kids is the 220cm Clear Blue Hawaii (a.k.a. "CBH") Tour paddle, which has a fiberglass shaft and stronger blades - though it weighs a few ounces more. We will probably phase out the Cannon Cascade in favor of the CBH since it seems like the CBH is a better value.

The Bravo Adjusta-Angle ($109) is a 230 cm Italian made take-apart paddle with a very strong fiberglass shaft similar to, but thicker (the wall thickness, not the o.d.) than the Cannon shaft material. The dovetail joint can be feathered at various angles to suit your needs & paddling conditions, and to limit wrist strain. This paddle is mainly interned for whitewater with it's relative beef and strong blades, though nothing says you cannot use this one for touring. Perhaps because these only come in solid black and are somewhat heavy - about three pounds, they haven't sold all that well, but for the price and unique adaptability they seem to be a good value. The blades are a 20% glass filled nylon, and are asymetric spoons, nearly identical to the Cannon Wave blade. The picture is not great because it always seems hard to get black stuff to come out with much contrast, but it's the best we could do. The shaft is ovaled on the right side via a raised hump with rubbery shrink tube over the top, an excellent grip even if you are wearing neoprene gloves.

Kayak Paddle Leash are something we sell with caution. These are for flat water and "mild" ocean use ONLY. They are absolutely not for whitewater or rivers with moving current, and even in heavy ocean surf you could get in trouble with one. Anything that attaches you to a paddle, or heaven forbid, to the boat, is generally a drowning waiting to occur. Paddle Leashes are more or less safe to use on water where you shouldn't need one anyway, because on calm ocean or lake waters, if you drop a paddle it's not going to make a beeline away from your kayak for any reason physics could explain. These are American made, 6' in length when stretched, 3' unstretched, made of nylon tubular webbing, with a loop in the protruding bungie cord on one end (for you) and a velcro loop on the webbing at the other end (to attach to the paddle shaft). We seem to get these in a different color every time we order. Our current stock is orange, not blue as shown.
