Raft Paddle Heavy Duty
Overview
Please note that due to complications installing UPS's oversize fees in a way where they will only get applied once, rather than multiplying for the number of paddles ordered, for the time being we have to ask that paddle orders be phoned in.
UPS always had an upcharge starting at 61", but a couple years back they began charging for anything over 48", which even affects many of our two piece kayak paddles. The issue is that they have rapidly increased the "overlength" sucharge dollar amount, which as of 2024 is now sitting at $38. This is ON TOP of the regular ship fees, so UPS on one or two paddles can be almost the same as for six paddles. And unlike the base ship rate, UPS does not apply negotiated shipper discounts on oversize fees, overweight fees (which now start at 51 pounds), or remote delivery zone fees. Just to give an idea, a box of four 5' paddles to CO recently, summer of 2024, was $63 for UPS. There was always an "overlength" upcharge, but it used to start at 61", not 49", and the dollar amount has been jacked way up the last few years due to UPS corporate greed. This is their policy, not ours. With longer items, it is always best if you can buy locally.
In any case, it is way too tricky to get the UPS module that connects to our cart to calculate long-box rates correctly, so that is why we ask you phone us on this item. Most of the apddles we sell are to local walk-in customers now, for obvious reasons.
For raft paddles these days we are mostly getting them from Hyside. These Hysides are substantially stronger than the standard grade Carlisle product and less expensive than the Carlisle Guide paddles. In the past we've tried to carry Caviness brand raft paddles, which are also strong and U.S.-made. The problem is in the way Caviness packages and ships their product. With the regular raft paddles, they have insisted on shipping them in six packs, which makes each box about $65 or more in UPS to the west coast where we are – and this adds $11 per paddle to our cost. Even if we get a very large quantity on a pallet, freight rates from Mississippi where they are located are also very steep. The Hyside paddles have shown to be an excellent value so they seem to be the best bet at this point. We carry them with dark orange blades and black shafts in both the 60” and 66” sizes. Please specify which length you want. The 66” are mainly for paddle captains, or bow paddlers on rafts with larger diameter tubes.
