As of this year Maxxon is welding the air holding seams on their pontoons and rafts to increase lifespan. In the 12' pontoons, Maxxon is trying to stock two different diameters, 20" and 25". This listing is for the 25" diameter welded tubes. As of this update Maxxon is out of the 20" size, but they plan to get more later this season. The 20 inch tubes are $40 less than these 25" pairs. Call us to check the status on the smaller diameter versions.
If you are making a whitewater or fishing cat frame from scratch, utilizing the 25" diameter will decrease your draft a bit, and increase capacity if you often boat with a passenger. Since anglers tend to fish at low flows, drafting less is a good thing. However, if you tend to go solo & light in high flow whitewater, the smaller 20" diameter are usually less flippy. Also, for those looking to replace existing tubes on a fishing rig, most use 20” to 21” pontoons. The new larger size may not work. Sometimes the only way to be sure is to cut out a 25” circle of cardboard and hold it up to the frame. Make sure you do this before ordering, otherwise you are responsible for UPS both directions and a restocking fee. Please note that pricing on all cat tubes is per pair, but for the pontoons only, not the frame or oars.
For more Maxxon information also see the write-up's for the 14' & 16' sizes (the P14+ Fatty and P16). Normally blue and gray will be the standard stock colors.
The Rocky Mountain brand does not produce a 12' size, so Maxxon is one of the only options for under $2,000. U.S. Made 12's, which are mostly special order, run about double the Maxxon cost.
The P12 X 25” tubes are around 55 pounds per pair. The appearance is slightly different now since there is no longer a circumference seam near the bow and stern - they are a continuous curve design. The top and bottom chafers are 11” wide, which is pretty generous. The only seam on the smaller Maxxon tubes runs lengthwise on the bottom, and this seam is almost completely covered by the bottom chafer. There are four D-rings per side, with spacing on the earlier ones we measured at about 25” apart. All Maxxon cat tubes and rafts come with a mediocre foot pump, and a minimal patch kit. They do not come with a carry bag.
